My PC has an i7-14700F, RTX 5070 Ti, 32GB of DDR5, and a Gigabyte B760M C V3 motherboard. The 2TB AGI NVMe drive has been hitting 100% active time with extremely high response times, causing downloads and installs to drop to 0 and sometimes making the entire system nearly unusable. I suspect the drive may be defective or simply poor at sustained workloads.
I mainly use the PC for gaming, large Steam and Game Pass downloads, game installs, mods, Windows, and everyday tasks. I want a reliable 2TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD that can handle those workloads without choking. My target budget is roughly $150–$250, though I could spend more if there is a meaningful reliability or performance advantage.
The Samsung 990 Pro 2TB, including the heatsink version, caught my attention, but I do not want to pay extra for performance I will not notice. Is it a good choice for this system, or would a cheaper drive from a reputable manufacturer perform essentially the same for gaming? Should I prioritize TLC NAND, a motherboard heatsink, or particular warranty and endurance ratings?
