Can an iPhone 3G or 3GS be upgraded to work with modern cellular data?

I found an old iPhone 3G or possibly 3GS and would like to use it again. Since it only supports 3G, which is no longer available in many places, is there any practical way to upgrade its hardware or otherwise make it connect to 4G or 5G networks?

The realistic workaround would be using a separate 4G or 5G hotspot, then connecting the old phone to that hotspot over Wi-Fi. The phone still wouldn’t have cellular data directly, but it could access the internet through the hotspot.

Even if a hardware modification were technically possible, it would cost far more than the phone is worth and would be extremely impractical. Modern apps and operating systems also wouldn’t run properly on such an old device.
