My computer was built in 2019 and still uses a traditional hard drive rather than an SSD. Applications open fairly quickly, but they frequently freeze until I have to close them. The drive shows 100% usage almost constantly. I have about 16 GB of RAM, and I mainly use the computer for browsing. Could upgrading to an SSD solve the problem, or might this be caused by software, failing hardware, or another issue? Is the computer still worth upgrading?

You can also try disabling SysMain temporarily to see whether it is contributing to the constant disk activity. Open the Services panel, find SysMain, stop it, and set its startup type to Disabled. Treat this as a troubleshooting step rather than a guaranteed fix, and check for drive-health warnings before making major changes.
Start by checking Task Manager while the problem is happening. Look for Windows or application updates, the process using the most disk time, and whether memory usage is also high. Run a memory test and check the hard drive's health as well. If the drive is healthy but remains a bottleneck, an SSD is a worthwhile upgrade; if malware or faulty software is responsible, an SSD alone won't fix it.
An SSD would make the system feel much faster, especially when Windows is swapping data or loading applications. However, 100% disk usage can also be caused by a background update, a runaway program, a failing hard drive, or insufficient available memory. Check Task Manager to see which process is using the disk before assuming the drive itself is the problem. With nearly 16 GB of RAM, adding memory probably isn't the first upgrade to try.
For a general browsing computer, a 500 GB SSD is usually plenty, while 1 TB gives you more room for applications and files. Back up anything important first. You can clone the old drive to the SSD if the used space fits, or perform a clean operating-system installation and keep the old drive for extra storage. A clean install may be the better option if the current system has years of accumulated software problems.
If the old drive is nearly full or showing errors, I would avoid cloning it and use a backup followed by a fresh installation instead.
