What happens if I use an RTX 5060 with a 4K monitor?

You can absolutely run games at 1080p on a 4K display. Since 4K is exactly twice the width and height of 1080p, integer scaling can map each source pixel to a 2x2 block and avoid some uneven scaling artifacts. However, it may still look softer than a native 1080p monitor, especially on a desktop or when the monitor handles the scaling poorly.

A 4K monitor could still make sense if you want the extra sharpness for work, browsing, films, or plan to upgrade the graphics card later. For a display bought mainly for RTX 5060 gaming, though, 1440p is probably the better middle ground. It will look sharper than 1080p without demanding nearly as much performance as 4K.

The monitor will work normally at 4K, but the RTX 5060 may not deliver good frame rates in demanding modern games at that resolution. You can switch individual games to 1080p, use DLSS or other upscaling, and lower the graphics settings. Older games, esports titles, and many indie games should run at 4K much more easily.

Keep in mind that 4K has four times as many pixels as 1080p, so it requires a lot more GPU power. A demanding game that runs at 100–120 FPS at 1080p might only manage around 30–60 FPS at native 4K, depending on the settings and game. The 8GB of VRAM on some RTX 5060 models can also become a limitation at 4K.
