My current PC has a Ryzen 9 3900X, an RTX 3080, 32GB of DDR4 running at 2133 MT/s, and roughly 3TB of SSD storage spread across four drives. I'm noticing lower FPS in CPU-heavy games such as DCS and other titles that are demanding on the processor and memory. Should I upgrade the CPU, tune or replace the RAM, or consider upgrading another component first? My motherboard is an X570 Aorus Elite.

A newer Intel platform such as a Core i7-14700K could be faster for both gaming and heavily threaded workloads, but it would require a new motherboard and possibly different memory. That is much more expensive than dropping a 5800X3D into the existing system, and the X3D chip is less sensitive to slow RAM. For this setup, tuning or replacing the RAM first and then choosing a 5800X3D if needed is the more practical route.
First check what is actually limiting performance while the game is running. If one or more CPU cores are maxed out while the GPU is underused, a 5800X3D is a good upgrade. If the GPU is near full utilization, changing the CPU probably won’t help much. Background processes are worth checking too, but the 3900X is still capable and doesn’t need replacing unless your games are clearly CPU-limited.
For gaming on the AM4 platform, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the strongest straightforward upgrade. It should work with the X570 Aorus Elite, but check the required BIOS version and update the BIOS before swapping CPUs if necessary. It offers a major improvement in CPU-limited games without requiring a new motherboard or DDR5 memory.
I’d investigate the RAM before buying a CPU. DDR4-2133 is quite slow for a Ryzen system, and enabling the memory’s XMP or DOCP profile may raise it closer to its rated speed, often 3000–3600 MT/s. That alone could improve minimum FPS, especially in simulation games. Make sure the system is stable after changing the setting.

That makes sense. I’ll check whether the memory is simply running at its default speed and try enabling the proper profile before deciding on a CPU upgrade.
