I'm upgrading a PC that has been running for about 10 years, mainly because newer games are dropping support for Pascal GPUs. I'm keeping my GTX 1080 for now, but I want a new graphics card for 1440p gaming. Ray tracing and path tracing are not major priorities for me, while power efficiency, low temperatures, quiet operation, and good looks matter quite a bit.
I originally planned to buy a PowerColor RX 9070 Hellhound for £491, but it sold out before I placed the order. With discounts available to me, I'm now choosing between these options:
- PowerColor RX 9070 Reaper 16GB — £439
- PowerColor RX 9070 XT Reaper 16GB — £507
- PowerColor RX 9070 XT Hellhound 16GB — £533
The RX 9070 seems appealing because it is more power-efficient, but the Hellhound models should have better cooling, lower noise, and a nicer design. Is the RX 9070 XT Hellhound worth £94 more than the standard RX 9070 Reaper, or would the cheaper card be the better-balanced choice?
The rest of the new system includes an Intel Ultra 5 250K Plus, MSI B860 Gaming Plus WiFi motherboard, Arctic Freezer 36 cooler, 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory, an 850W power supply, and several Arctic case fans. The existing case is an NZXT Phantom 410, and my current GPU is an MSI GTX 1080 Gaming.

If the extra cost fits your budget, I’d choose the RX 9070 XT Hellhound. You’re paying for both the additional XT performance and the Hellhound’s quieter, cooler design, and the £26 difference between the two XT models is fairly small. If you need to save money, any of these cards should still be a major upgrade from the GTX 1080.
The XT is around 12% faster, so the main question is whether that performance increase is worth the extra money to you. The efficiency gap does not have to be as large as the default settings suggest, either. You can lower the XT’s clock target to roughly 3,000–3,100 MHz and retain most of its performance while cutting power use and heat significantly.
For gaming alone, the RX 9070 XT is the stronger choice at these prices. The £68 increase over the standard RX 9070 is reasonable for the extra performance, especially at 1440p. The Hellhound seems worthwhile on top of that if noise, temperatures, and appearance are important to you.
The discounted prices make the XT Hellhound look like the best overall deal. Normally the price gap might be harder to justify, but only paying £26 more than the XT Reaper gets you the better cooler and acoustics. Your 850W power supply should also be more than adequate.
The discounts are doing most of the work here. I also do a lot of multitasking, photo editing, and video editing, so I’m keeping the rest of the system in mind rather than focusing only on gaming performance.
That’s a useful point. The RX 9070 is already very capable, but being able to tune the XT for lower power and temperatures makes the faster model more appealing. It should also be gentler on the card over the long term.
