I bought an Alienware m16 R2 about 14 months ago. Its original design capacity was 88,195 mWh, but the current full-charge capacity is only 70,688 mWh, or roughly 80% of the original capacity. I also left it plugged in at around 85% for one period lasting about two months. I usually play lighter games such as Valorant, Apex Legends, and Minecraft, and I do not game while running on battery. I mainly use battery power for studying and browsing, and the laptop has completed about 342 charge cycles. Is this amount of degradation typical for a gaming laptop, and should I expect to replace the battery within the next two or three years?

Gaming laptops tend to age batteries faster because heat is a major factor, even when the charger is connected. About 80% health after 342 cycles is more wear than ideal, but it does not automatically mean the battery is defective. Keeping the battery around 20–80% and using the manufacturer’s conservation mode can help, but avoiding heat is just as important. Keep the laptop well ventilated and avoid leaving it constantly hot at maximum charge. You generally only need to replace it when the runtime becomes inconvenient, the battery swells, or the system reports a fault.
The battery report from the command line is usually a reasonable estimate, but the full-charge figure can be recalibrated and may not be perfectly precise. Leaving it at 85% for two months should not by itself cause this much loss; age, operating temperature, and the number of partial charges all contribute. Three hundred forty-two cycles in a little over a year is fairly frequent use, even if none of those cycles came from gaming. A conservation limit can explain why another laptop has much higher health after several years, since it may have accumulated far fewer effective cycles and spent less time fully charged.
I always played games while plugged in, but I used the laptop on battery for studying and browsing. I was surprised by the 342 cycles and wondered why the degradation was so much faster than on some other laptops.
