I'm new to building PCs and I'm choosing between two similarly priced prebuilt systems. Both include the same RAM and SSD, but one uses a Ryzen 5 5600X and the other uses an Intel Core i5-13500. Which processor would be the better choice for an RTX 5060, mainly for gaming but possibly for general productivity too?

The Core i5-13500 is the faster processor overall. It has more cores and performs noticeably better in productivity and other multithreaded workloads. Its gaming advantage is usually smaller, but it still tends to be slightly ahead.
I’d lean toward the i5-13500 unless you specifically want the Ryzen upgrade path. The AM4 system could later accept a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D, which are excellent gaming upgrades, while the Intel platform may offer stronger overall performance now. Make sure the motherboard is decent and that the cooler is adequate for whichever prebuilt you choose.
For gaming with an RTX 5060, the difference may be fairly small, especially if both systems use DDR4. If you’re only gaming, choose whichever prebuilt is cheaper or has the better motherboard, power supply, and cooling. The i5-13500 becomes the stronger choice if you also plan to do editing, streaming, rendering, or other demanding work.
The Intel platform can also support upgrades, but the exact options depend on the motherboard and BIOS. I wouldn’t choose a low-quality board just because it advertises compatibility with higher-end processors.
