Are a native 12V-2x6 socket and a 12V-2x6 cable that connects to two separate 8-pin sockets on the power supply essentially equivalent in stability and safety? I'm comparing ATX 3.1 PCIe 5.1 power supplies. Some models provide a native 12V-2x6 socket rated for 600W, while another model includes a 12V-2x6 cable that splits into two 8-pin connectors on the PSU side. I was originally considering a 1200W unit, but I'm also open to a 1000W model and want the most reliable setup rather than choosing based on FOMO.

The split arrangement may have slightly less theoretical risk because there is only one 12V-2x6 connection on the PSU side instead of one on both ends. In real use, that difference is minor. Choose the unit based on total capacity, quality, warranty, and how many native PCIe cables it includes. If you need more than 850W, the higher-wattage model may be the better choice, especially if you want additional headroom for future graphics cards or other components.

The four smaller pins are sense or identification pins. They tell the graphics card how much power the cable is rated to provide; they aren’t temperature sensors and they don’t actively prevent the connector from overheating. A properly made two-8-pin-to-12V-2x6 cable still provides the appropriate sense information, so it doesn’t automatically bypass the connector’s power limits or safety features. The main safety factors are using the correct cable, avoiding sharp bends near the plug, and making sure it is completely seated.

The sense pins also aren’t really carrying a data conversation. They’re passive connections used to identify the available power level, with the graphics card handling the power behavior through its normal control logic.

For practical purposes, both setups can be safe when the PSU and cable follow the specification and everything is fully inserted. The older connector was called 12VHPWR, while 12V-2x6 is the revised version. Using two established 8-pin connections on the PSU side may arguably reduce the risk at that end, since those connectors have a long track record, but the 12V-2x6 plug at the graphics card is still the part that needs to be seated correctly. The difference usually isn’t large enough to justify choosing a lower-wattage PSU.
