One thing I like about some AMD stock coolers is the simple installation: leave the motherboard's retention brackets in place, hook the cooler onto them, and secure the lever. Why don't more aftermarket air coolers use the same mounting system instead of requiring you to remove the brackets and install a separate mounting kit with screws? Is it mainly because of cooler size, mounting pressure, compatibility, or limitations of the bracket design?

Many aftermarket coolers are much larger and heavier than the stock models. Their heatpipes, towers, and fans can interfere with the space needed for the retention bar and lever, and the cooler may need mounting points in different locations. A custom bracket lets the manufacturer position the pressure points where they work best.
There have been coolers that use the stock clips, but the design has trade-offs. The brackets can be a weak point, especially with heavier coolers, and uneven pressure can hurt contact between the heatsink and CPU. Separate mounting hardware generally provides better support, clearance, and pressure distribution.
The stock clips aren’t necessarily easier or stronger. They can require a surprising amount of force, be awkward to remove, and may not distribute mounting pressure as evenly as a screw-and-spring system. Larger coolers also need more controlled pressure to stay secure without stressing the motherboard or CPU socket.
The existing brackets aren’t always used even by AMD’s own coolers. Several Wraith models attach with spring-loaded screws to the motherboard backplate instead. That approach gives more consistent pressure and can also be made shorter for low-profile coolers.
Compatibility is another big factor. Most aftermarket coolers support both AMD and Intel sockets, and Intel platforms generally use screw-mounted systems. Providing one adjustable mounting system for both platforms is often cheaper and more practical than adding an AMD-specific clip mechanism.
