What CPU and GPU upgrade makes the most sense for a 1440p workstation build?

I'm considering replacing my long-serving i7-7700K, 32GB, and RTX 2070 Super system. I'm in Estonia, where prebuilt pricing hasn't been especially attractive, so I'm leaning toward building a partly new PC. I plan to keep my current case, 850W be quiet! PSU, and several PCIe 3.0 SSDs. I may also reuse the RTX 2070 Super initially and upgrade the graphics card later.

I care about value more than having the absolute fastest system, but I would like it to remain useful for roughly five years. My main workloads are programming and 3D CAD, with occasional 1440p gaming. I definitely want 32GB of memory. A local parts retailer suggested a Ryzen 7 9700X or Intel Core Ultra 7 265K, followed later by an RX 9070 or 9070 XT. I also noticed that the Ryzen 7 7800X3D costs only about €40 more than those options.

Would it make more sense to move to AM5 or the current Intel platform, or should I save money by reusing my existing DDR4 memory with an older platform? The memory is only 2400MHz and came from a Lenovo workstation, so I'm not even sure whether it supports XMP. I'm also trying to decide between an RX 9070 XT and an RTX 5070 Ti, especially since the 9070 XT is substantially cheaper locally. Any advice on the best overall direction would be appreciated.

An 850W be quiet! supply should generally be enough for a modern single-GPU build, assuming it is a good model and still in healthy condition. Your PCIe 3.0 SSDs can also be reused; they will not prevent the new system from working, though newer drives would offer higher sequential speeds. I’d spend the budget on a modern AM5 motherboard, 32GB of DDR5, and a balanced CPU first rather than replacing parts that are still adequate.

The RX 9070 XT looks like the better value if it is around €850 and the RTX 5070 Ti is closer to €1,250. Both should be comfortable for 1440p gaming, and the 9070 XT’s 16GB of VRAM is useful for keeping the card relevant longer. The Nvidia option is easier to justify if your CAD software benefits significantly from CUDA, Nvidia-specific rendering features, or better driver support, so check the exact applications you use before deciding.

For ordinary viewport work, AMD may be fine, but some professional CAD and rendering tools are much better supported on Nvidia. The software requirements matter more than general gaming benchmarks here.

For gaming, the 7800X3D can still be a strong choice, but for a mixed coding, CAD, and gaming workload I wouldn’t automatically pay extra for it. A newer mainstream AM5 processor such as the 9700X gives you a current platform and strong general-purpose performance. The important advantage is the upgrade path: you can replace the CPU later without changing the motherboard and memory. Keep the existing GPU for now if it still meets your needs, then upgrade when prices are better.

If you want to minimize the cost, reusing DDR4 is possible. A Core i5-14600K with an LGA1700 motherboard that specifically supports DDR4 would be a capable pairing, and an AM4 Ryzen 7 system is another inexpensive option. However, 2400MHz memory will leave some performance on the table, particularly with Ryzen, and an older platform gives you less upgrade flexibility. For a system you intend to keep for five years, AM5 with DDR5 is probably the more sensible long-term foundation, even if the initial cost is higher.

That’s my concern with reusing the old memory. I don’t need the absolute best benchmark numbers, but I also don’t want slow 2400MHz RAM to undermine the rest of the build.
