I'm planning a fresh gaming-only PC build and am aiming for 4K gaming at around 60 FPS on a 60 Hz display. I'm interested in modern AAA games and like using ray tracing or path tracing when possible, but I'm not especially focused on extremely high frame rates. I'll be using Windows for access to Xbox titles, with SteamOS possibly being added later, so I'm not locked into either Nvidia or AMD. The RTX 5090 is far beyond what I'm willing to spend at roughly $4,000, but I could afford an RTX 5080 for around $1,500 if the performance is meaningfully better. Is the 5080 a sensible choice, or would an RTX 5070 Ti or Radeon RX 9070 XT offer better value for this use case?

At around $1,500, the RTX 5080 is a poor value for ordinary gaming. It is generally only about 10–20% faster than a 5070 Ti or RX 9070 XT, while costing roughly 30–100% more depending on the deal. The RX 9070 XT is the strongest value option, and the 5070 Ti gives you Nvidia’s features and usually a stronger ray-tracing experience without the 5080’s premium.
There isn’t really another card that competes directly with the 5080 at its exact price; the real question is whether you want to pay the premium over the lower-tier options. If you can find a 5080 close to MSRP, it’s a reasonable enthusiast purchase, particularly for 4K RT and long-term ownership. At $1,500, I’d be much more hesitant. I’d compare actual prices, total system cost, and the specific games you play rather than assuming the 5080 is automatically the best choice.
