What Network Setup Issues Can Cause Random Gaming Lag Spikes?

My internet speed is good enough for my needs, but for the past six months I've been getting sudden lag spikes in every online game, with ping jumping from around 30 ms to over 400 ms. I've tried basic setup guides and port forwarding, and my provider says they can't find a problem. Are there router or network settings that commonly cause this? Would switching to a better router or Cat6 Ethernet cable help, or should I be checking something else first?

A higher-end Ethernet cable probably won’t help if your current cable is working properly. Cat5e is already capable of much more speed than most internet connections. A newer router could help if the current one has poor Wi-Fi coverage or bufferbloat, but it won’t fix a problem coming from the provider’s line. Try running a continuous ping while gaming: ping your router’s local address and a public address such as 1.1.1.1. If only the public ping spikes, the issue is beyond your local Wi-Fi.

First figure out whether the problem is Wi-Fi or the internet connection itself. If you’re currently wireless, test the computer or console with a long Ethernet cable directly to the router. Wi-Fi interference, weak signal, distance, and congestion are common causes of spikes. Port forwarding usually affects whether a device can accept connections, not your normal ping during a game.

That makes sense. I’ve mostly been using Wi-Fi, so I’ll test a wired connection before changing router settings.

Check for nearby wireless interference with a Wi-Fi analyzer app. On 2.4 GHz, neighboring networks can crowd the same channels, especially in apartments. Switching to a less congested channel, moving closer to the router, or using 5 GHz can help. Keep in mind that 5 GHz generally has better performance but doesn’t travel through walls as well.
