I'm putting together a storage build and want a reliable, long-lasting hard drive for media storage. Ideally, it should run quietly and stay reasonably cool. I'm considering the WD Red Plus WD40EFPX and the Seagate IronWolf ST4000VN006, in either 4TB or 8TB capacities. How do real-world reliability, noise, temperature, performance, and warranty or data-recovery support compare between these brands? Is there any meaningful difference between the 4TB and 8TB models? I'm also wondering whether two 4TB drives would be a better choice than one 8TB drive, especially since I want to keep backups of my SSD and avoid losing data if a drive fails. I'm new to NAS storage, so I'd appreciate a simple explanation of redundancy as well.

Check the exact model’s spindle speed if low noise and power use matter. A 5,400/5,600 RPM drive such as the WD40EFPX will generally be a little quieter and cooler than a 7,200 RPM model. For only one or two drives, reliability is still partly luck, so plan as though any drive could fail at an inconvenient time. Redundancy means keeping extra copies or using multiple drives in a setup that can tolerate one drive failing, such as a mirrored pair. It helps reduce downtime, but it is not a substitute for a separate backup.
Either drive should work well in a NAS, and there isn’t a clear reliability winner between current WD Red Plus and Seagate IronWolf models. Performance, advertised lifespan ratings, and warranty coverage are broadly comparable, so price is usually the deciding factor. Seagate’s IronWolf warranty may also include a data-recovery attempt if the drive fails during the warranty period, although recovery is never guaranteed and good personal backups are still essential. The 8TB versions don’t generally provide a dramatically different experience beyond offering more capacity.
