Will a Ryzen 7 9800X3D Bottleneck an RTX 3080 Ti?

I'm planning to build a gaming PC next month and am considering a Ryzen 7 9800X3D with 64GB of RAM and an RTX 3080 Ti. Would the CPU hold back the graphics card? I'll mainly play Warzone at 1080p and Counter-Strike 2 at 1268×768 using competitive settings, so I'm wondering whether those CPU-heavy games change the answer. I'm also considering a newer GPU such as an RTX 4070 Super or possibly an RTX 4080 Super, partly for better efficiency and AI workloads.

The 9800X3D is an extremely strong gaming CPU, so the 3080 Ti will usually be the limiting component rather than the processor. At 1440p or 4K, this pairing makes especially good sense. At 1080p with low competitive settings, games like Warzone and CS2 can become more CPU-limited, but that is normal when chasing very high frame rates and does not mean the combination is poorly matched.

A 9800X3D should also leave plenty of room for a future graphics-card upgrade. If you’re buying a GPU today, compare current prices, warranty, power use, condition, and VRAM rather than choosing based only on the word “bottleneck.” A fairly priced RTX 4080 Super could be more appealing than an expensive 3080 Ti, especially for newer games and AI workloads, but verify that any used card is in good condition.

A similar 9800X3D and 3080 Ti setup runs very well at 1440p ultrawide. The graphics card is clearly the weaker part of the system, but it still delivers high frame rates in demanding games. The 64GB memory capacity is reasonable if you plan to use AI tools or other memory-heavy applications; for gaming alone, 32GB would usually be enough.

The exact result depends on the game, resolution, graphics settings, and target frame rate. In most ordinary games, the GPU should reach high utilization first. Competitive shooters at low settings are the main exception, since they can push the CPU harder and expose a CPU limit even with a very fast processor.
