I'm trying to perform my first clean installation of Windows 11. I bought an 8GB USB drive because I read that it was large enough, but the ISO I downloaded is 7.88GB and Rufus says the image is too large for the selected drive. I can't easily afford a larger USB drive where I live. Is there a safe alternative, such as another installation method or tool?

Formatting the drive as NTFS is worth checking, but it won’t create extra capacity. Since the ISO is nearly the entire size of the drive, the error is expected rather than a Rufus problem.
An 8GB drive doesn’t actually provide a full 8GB of usable space, so a 7.88GB ISO may not fit once formatting and filesystem overhead are included. Ventoy or changing the filesystem usually won’t fix a genuine capacity problem. The safest option is to borrow or obtain a 16GB drive if possible.
Try Microsoft’s official Media Creation Tool instead of writing the downloaded ISO with Rufus. It can build the installation media directly and may fit on an 8GB drive, depending on the current release. Make sure you download it from Microsoft and back up anything important first.
A smaller, legitimate Windows 11 release may fit, but avoid using an outdated image just to save space because installation and update problems can result. If you use an older release, update it immediately after installation and obtain the image from an official source.
