I'm getting back into PC building after being away from the hardware scene for a while. I'm looking for a good CPU to pair with an RTX 4060, preferably on a DDR4 platform because DDR5 pricing still seems high. The Ryzen 5 5600X is one option I've considered, but I'm less familiar with the current Intel choices. Gaming performance matters, but I also care about performance per watt and keeping the system quiet. What CPUs offer the best value, and at what prices would it make sense to choose one over another?

For a typical gaming build, the Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X is a very sensible match. The 5600 is usually preferable if it’s noticeably cheaper or if efficiency matters, since performance is close to the 5600X while power use is a little lower. A Core i5-12400F is another strong option if the platform pricing works out.
For a low-power, quiet system, I’d lean toward the Ryzen 5 5600 or Core i5-12400F rather than a high-end chip. At 1080p the RTX 4060 will usually be the limiting factor, and at 1440p that’s even more likely. Spend the savings on a good cooler and a case with sensible airflow.
If you want the best gaming performance while staying on AM4, look at an X3D processor such as the 5600X3D or 5800X3D. They can be excellent for CPU-heavy games, but they’re only worth it when priced reasonably. For an RTX 4060, a regular 5600 or 5600X is generally enough, so don’t pay a large premium for X3D unless you specifically play games that benefit from the extra cache.
Price should decide this more than the RTX 4060 itself. A 5600X is a good buy around $100–$140, but if it costs much more, compare it with an i5-12600KF or i5-14400F. Those Intel chips can offer more overall CPU performance, though their power consumption and cooling requirements may be higher.
The 5800X3D is the fastest AM4 gaming option, but calling it the best choice for every RTX 4060 build ignores its price. A cheaper 5600 may deliver nearly the same experience in many games.
