I recently bought a Dell OptiPlex 7010 Tower for $50 at a tag sale. It has an Intel Core i7-3770, 8GB of RAM, integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000, and a 250W power supply. It can barely run Roblox, but I'd like to play Phasmophobia and Dead by Daylight. I currently have about $800 saved from working in the United States, though I can wait and save more if necessary. Since I'm not really allowed to have a computer at home for study-related reasons, I can't ask my parents to help pay for or choose one. Would it make more sense to upgrade this OptiPlex, buy a discounted prebuilt, or save for a custom-built computer?

The i7-3770 is old but still usable for these games. The biggest problem is the Intel HD 4000 graphics. You could add a low-profile graphics card, but the 250W power supply limits your choices. Look for a low-power card that doesn’t need a separate power connector, and consider upgrading to 16GB of RAM. This could be a relatively inexpensive way to get started, although it won’t give you the same upgrade potential as a newer system.
Before buying anything, check whether your OptiPlex is the standard tower model and confirm the power supply and available space. A low-profile graphics card is probably the safest upgrade, but some models may still struggle because of the old CPU and limited power supply. Since you have $800, a newer prebuilt or entry-level custom PC would likely be the better long-term purchase if you can save a little more and buy from a reputable retailer. You’d get a modern processor, 16GB of RAM, and a dedicated graphics card without having to work around the Dell’s proprietary limitations.
