My current PC is starting to feel dated, and I'm trying to decide where an upgrade would make the most sense. The system has a Ryzen 7 3700X, RTX 3060 Ti 8GB, 32GB of DDR4-3600 memory, a GIGABYTE B450M DS3H motherboard, and a 550W power supply.
The CPU seems to be my biggest limitation, especially in games like Rust, so I'm considering upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and possibly replacing the power supply. That route would cost roughly $450–$500.
The other option is a complete move to AM5 using a bundle with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, B650E motherboard, and 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory. Keeping my RTX 3060 Ti, the full rebuild would cost around $1,100. I'm mainly targeting 1440p gaming above 120 FPS when possible, with a mix of single-player games and CPU-heavy titles. Which upgrade path would offer the better value?

Your current B450 board only provides PCIe 3.0, while the RTX 3060 Ti supports PCIe 4.0. A reasonably priced B550 board would give you PCIe 4.0 support for the graphics card and compatible NVMe storage, and it would also provide a better foundation for a 5800X3D. Just update the BIOS before changing processors and check the board’s CPU support list. The performance gain from the motherboard alone may be modest, so treat it as preparation for the CPU upgrade rather than expecting a huge FPS increase.
Before choosing an upgrade, think about your target resolution and frame rate. At 1440p, the RTX 3060 Ti may become the limiting factor in many games, but CPU-heavy games such as Rust can still benefit substantially from a stronger processor. A 5800X3D is a very noticeable drop-in upgrade for AM4 and would let you keep your existing memory and motherboard, assuming the BIOS supports it. You may not need a complete AM5 rebuild yet unless you specifically want a longer upgrade path.
If the goal is maximum value, I’d lean toward staying on AM4: get the 5800X3D or a less expensive 5700X3D, then put the remaining money toward a future graphics card. The 550W power supply should be checked for its exact model and age before upgrading; replace it if it’s low quality or lacks enough headroom. AM5 makes more sense if you want a fresh platform with future CPU upgrades and can comfortably spend the extra money, but the 7800X3D system will not make the RTX 3060 Ti dramatically faster in GPU-limited games.
I hadn’t realized the B450 board was limiting the PCIe connection. I’ll look into a B550 board and check the BIOS support before deciding on the processor.
