I recently bought a Panasonic CF-S10 Let's Note to watch physical movies, but most commercial DVDs won't play in VLC. The disc loads briefly and then VLC returns to its normal idle screen without showing an error. A couple of movies worked, including Friday and Hellraiser, while Saw, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Next Friday did not. I've also tried other media players and confirmed that these are standard DVDs, not Blu-rays. After changing the drive's region to the one used by the discs, they began loading, but some movies now play with severe lag and visual glitches. What else can I try?

Check the DVD drive’s region setting first. Commercial DVDs are often region-locked, and the drive may have been set to a different region. In the drive properties, select the region matching the discs you’re using. Be careful, though—the number of region changes is usually limited.
Also check whether the optical drive is reading slowly or repeatedly retrying. Clean the discs and the drive lens, make sure the laptop is running from wall power, and try playing a less demanding DVD. If only certain discs glitch while others play normally, the drive may be aging or having trouble reading those particular discs.
Since the discs load after fixing the region, the remaining problem is probably playback performance rather than the DVDs themselves. Try disabling hardware acceleration in the media player, closing other programs, and testing a different DVD-capable player. An older laptop may struggle with software decoding or copy-protection handling, especially on newer movie releases.
That fixed the discs that would not load. They play now, but some of them are extremely laggy and glitchy.
