All Siemens HiPath 150E Phones Lost Power After Electrical Work

I'm troubleshooting an older Siemens HiPath 150E telephone system at a hotel, and I'm not very familiar with this equipment. The hotel has three reception phones and one phone in each room. Before recent electrical work, everything worked except one reception phone, whose socket had no power or connectivity.

About a week ago, contractors installing refrigerators switched several electrical panels and breakers on and off. They did not enter the server room, but afterward every telephone socket in the hotel lost both power and connection. The rest of the hotel's electrical systems and network are working normally.

I'm wondering whether the HiPath itself, its power supply, or an internal fuse could have failed. The system definitely receives power, and when it starts up it sometimes beeps, makes noise, and flashes a few LEDs. The indicators are behind the cover, though, and I don't yet know what the patterns mean. The equipment is installed in a very narrow, wall-mounted rack, so accessing the rear of the patch panels is difficult. What should I check first, and is there a safe way to inspect the connections without removing the patch panels?

The cabinet appears unusually narrow, possibly a small-format rack rather than a standard 19-inch rack. Since the rear of the patch panels is difficult to reach, don’t start by removing everything. First label and inspect the accessible front connections, check for loose plugs or damaged cables, and use a flashlight or inspection camera if necessary. If the PBX shows a fault, troubleshoot its outputs first; if it looks healthy, then trace one known extension from the PBX to the patch panel and onward to the socket.

Start with the simplest possibilities: confirm the HiPath is actually powered and that its switch hasn’t been turned off. A power supply that has been running for many years can fail when it experiences a power interruption, especially if its capacitors are already worn out. When you can access it, check the power and fault LEDs behind the cover and document any beep pattern before cycling power repeatedly.

There is definitely power reaching the unit, but I can’t currently access the indicators behind the cover. It beeps and flashes some LEDs during startup, so I’m trying to find out what those signals mean before I return on Monday.

If every extension went dead at the same time, look at the PBX power supply, protection circuitry, and internal fuses before assuming all the patch-panel wiring failed. An accidental test on a live telephone-system port can sometimes blow a fuse or disable an extension section, so check whether anyone used a cable tester on the phone runs during the electrical work. Only open the unit with the power isolated and use the correct service documentation; don’t substitute a fuse with a higher rating.

The contractors were working on electrical panels rather than the phone system, but a power event could still have exposed a failing supply or protection fuse. I’ll check for documented fuse locations and fault indicators when I can access the cabinet.

Also verify the physical power switch. Some HiPath units have a rocker switch behind or near the front cover, and a damaged or displaced cover can make it easy to leave the switch in the off position. The startup sounds and flashing lights may be normal, but record exactly which LEDs flash and whether the sequence repeats, since that can distinguish normal booting from a hardware fault.
