I'm planning to build a desktop, but I've moved around a lot and have mainly used laptops. My current laptop, purchased in 2023, has 2×16 GB of DDR5-6000 SODIMM memory. Can I reuse that laptop RAM in a desktop with an adapter, or would it be better to buy standard desktop DIMMs? If an adapter is technically possible, what drawbacks should I expect in terms of stability, compatibility, performance, or upgrade options?

A better route is to choose a compact desktop platform that natively uses SODIMMs. Some small-form-factor systems and certain mini-PC motherboards support laptop memory directly, so you wouldn’t need an adapter. Just verify the board’s supported memory type, capacity, and speed before buying.
SODIMM-to-DIMM adapters can work in some cases, but they’re generally not a great choice. Compatibility and stability can be hit or miss, and you may be limited to whatever speed and timings the laptop modules and motherboard can reliably support. You also add another physical connection and usually lose flexibility compared with buying proper desktop memory. Unless you specifically need to reuse those modules, standard desktop DIMMs are the safer option.
That makes sense. I was hoping to save the cost, but it sounds like buying desktop memory will avoid a lot of potential headaches.
