I've been using 4×4GB DDR4 for several years and want to upgrade my system. I'm deciding between adding a 16GB stick alongside one of my existing 4GB sticks, or replacing the current memory with a matched 2×8GB kit. The 16GB + 4GB option seems appealing because it provides more total memory and might leave more room for future upgrades, but I'm concerned about dual-channel operation, compatibility, and stability. Which setup would make the most sense?

Before buying anything, confirm how much RAM you actually need. For general gaming and everyday use, 16GB is often enough, while 32GB is a worthwhile upgrade for heavier multitasking or newer demanding games. If you upgrade, replacing the old modules with 2×16GB gives you capacity and dual-channel performance without mixing generations of RAM.
A matched 2×8GB kit is the safer choice. It should run in proper dual-channel mode with fewer compatibility or speed issues than mixing a 16GB stick with an older 4GB module. If you need more than 16GB, a matched 2×16GB kit would be even better, assuming your budget and motherboard support it.
A 16GB + 4GB setup may work, but it usually uses asymmetric or “flex” mode: part of the memory runs in dual channel while the remainder runs in single channel. Mixing modules can also force lower speeds or cause instability, especially if they aren’t from the same kit. Check your motherboard’s memory support list and use matched sticks whenever possible.

So the extra capacity could still help, but it isn’t as clean or reliable as using a matched pair. I’d only choose the mixed setup if buying a proper kit isn’t practical.
