I've been using 4×4GB DDR4 for several years and want to upgrade my memory. I'm considering adding a 16GB module alongside one or more of my existing 4GB sticks, or replacing the current setup with a matched 2×8GB kit. I'm mainly wondering how flex mode, dual-channel performance, stability, and future upgrade options compare. Which configuration would make the most sense?

A matched kit is the safer choice. Mixing a 16GB stick with 4GB modules can work, but the memory may run at lower speeds or require manual tuning, and there’s a greater chance of instability. A matched 2×8GB kit should run properly in dual channel with fewer headaches.
If you genuinely need more capacity, I’d lean toward 2×16GB rather than combining mismatched modules. It gives you 32GB immediately, keeps dual-channel operation, and leaves the other memory slots available for a future upgrade. Otherwise, 2×8GB is perfectly reasonable for a typical gaming system.
The important distinction is that you mean adding a 16GB module alongside 4GB sticks, not using sixteen 4GB sticks. That mixed setup may use flex mode, where matching portions run in dual channel and the remainder runs in single channel. It can function, but a matched pair is generally preferable.
