I've earned Network+, Security+, and AWS Cloud Practitioner this year, and I'm studying for the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (EX200) followed by the Red Hat Certified Engineer-level administration exam (EX294). With ongoing layoffs in the technology industry, I'm wondering how stable Linux or Red Hat administration careers are in this region. Would a security clearance or defense contracting experience significantly improve my job prospects?

Eligibility for a security clearance can make a major difference, so highlight your current Public Trust status and look for employers willing to sponsor a higher clearance.
A clearance can significantly improve your options in this region. Defense contractors and government technology firms frequently hire Linux administrators, security-focused administrators, and related infrastructure roles. Companies such as RTX and Booz Allen are examples of the kinds of employers worth researching.
Don’t limit your search to traditional Linux administrator titles. Information Systems Security Officer roles can be a useful path, especially with Security+ and a Public Trust background. Those positions may combine system administration, compliance, security controls, and documentation.
The D.C. metro area regularly has on-site Linux systems administrator openings, so the local market appears considerably stronger than many other regions. No job is completely protected from layoffs, but demand is supported by government and defense work.
