I'm looking for a network cable tester for my team that can work safely with PoE without costing more than $1,000. I'm considering the Fluke Networks MicroScanner PoE Cable Verifier and the NetAlly LinkSprinter 300. Are either of these good choices, and are there other testers worth considering? Our main needs are troubleshooting wiring and verifying that network connections and PoE devices are working properly, rather than certifying newly installed structured cabling.

The Fluke MicroScanner PoE is a solid choice for troubleshooting patching mistakes, mislabeled jacks, and basic cable faults. It’s designed to tolerate PoE detection instead of immediately warning you to disconnect, which is useful in day-to-day work. Just keep in mind that it isn’t a certification tester for new structured cabling installations; formal certification requires much more expensive equipment.
The Fluke and LinkSprinter serve different purposes. The Fluke is better for validating physical wiring and finding incorrect pairs or patching problems. The LinkSprinter is excellent for checking whether a cable connected to a switch provides a working network connection and for testing basic PoE and connectivity. However, it needs a live switch or network and won’t help diagnose every underlying cabling fault. Pockethernet is another affordable option, although it relies on a phone app, which may be inconvenient for some teams.
The MicroScanner2 is also worth considering if you don’t need detailed PoE power measurements. It detects PoE without behaving badly when connected to an active PoE circuit, unlike some inexpensive cable testers that raise alarms or require immediate disconnection.

The phone dependency is my main hesitation with Pockethernet, but the price and feature set make it interesting for occasional or hobbyist use.
