Should I upgrade my CPU and motherboard along with my GPU?

I built my current PC around Thanksgiving 2022 and am considering a GPU upgrade for both AI workloads and gaming. The system currently has a Ryzen 5 3600X, an MSI MPG B550 Gaming Edge WiFi motherboard, 32GB of DDR4-3200 CL16 memory, and a Radeon RX 5500 XT 4GB. I'm comparing an RTX 3050 8GB with a used RTX 3060 12GB, and both are available for roughly $250. Would it make sense to replace the CPU and motherboard too, or is the current platform still capable enough that I should focus my budget on the graphics card?

If you decide to replace the whole platform eventually, a B760 board paired with a Core i5-12600K, i5-14400, i7-12700K, or a comparable F-series chip would be a reasonable modern alternative. That upgrade is optional, though—the B550 system is still a good match for an RTX 3060 and doesn’t need immediate replacement.

The B550 motherboard is still perfectly fine, so replacing it alone would not improve performance. A Ryzen 5 5600 would be a worthwhile drop-in CPU upgrade later, but I’d prioritize the graphics card first. Also, avoid the RTX 3050 if it costs about the same as a 3060—it’s significantly weaker for both gaming and AI, while the 3060’s 12GB of VRAM is much more useful.

The used RTX 3060 12GB is the better choice by far at that price. Your current motherboard and memory can support it without any problem, and the Ryzen 5 3600X should be adequate for now. If you eventually want a CPU upgrade, a Ryzen 5 5600 would be a sensible option without changing the motherboard.

A new motherboard only makes sense if you’re moving to a newer CPU platform, and that would use money that could go toward a better GPU. Since the RTX 3050 is a poor value, I’d get the 3060 and keep the rest of the system for now. Your parts are not about to become incompatible, and you can upgrade the platform later when you can afford a more substantial performance jump.
