I built my current PC in 2020 and am considering replacing the motherboard and CPU while keeping my 128GB of DDR4 memory. The system uses a Core i9-10900K, an ASUS ROG STRIX Z590-E Gaming motherboard, an H115 liquid cooler, and an RTX 3070. It has become unstable, with occasional hangs, overheating, and Windows lag, so I'm already considering a clean Windows reinstall and may as well upgrade at the same time. I use the machine for audio and video work, Photoshop, heavy browser multitasking, security-camera recording, Plex transcoding, occasional virtual machines, and games such as Diablo 4 and Path of Exile. Is the Core i9-14900K a sensible choice for this mixed workload, and what would be a suitable high-end DDR4 motherboard to pair with it?

The right CPU depends on what is actually limiting you. For gaming, a 14900K would be excessive with an RTX 3070, and a 14600K or i7-class chip would already be more than enough. For heavy rendering, encoding, virtual machines, and other sustained productivity work, stepping up to an i7 or i9 makes more sense.
The 14900K can run with DDR4, but you’ll need an LGA1700 motherboard specifically designed for DDR4; many premium boards only support DDR5. Look for a Z790 DDR4 model with strong VRMs, adequate cooling, multiple M.2 slots, and a BIOS that includes the latest Intel microcode. The 14900K runs very hot and draws a lot of power, so verify that the H115 and case airflow are in good shape. Updating the BIOS and using Intel’s recommended power limits is important for long-term stability.
Since you need 128GB and don’t want to replace the memory, Intel’s 14th-generation platform is one of the more straightforward upgrade paths. Just don’t choose a motherboard based only on how expensive or feature-packed it is: confirm that it supports your exact DDR4 kit, has enough DIMM capacity, and has a current BIOS. If your workloads are genuinely using all the cores, the 14900K is reasonable, but otherwise an i7 would offer a better balance of heat, power, and performance.
Before replacing everything, make sure the instability is actually hardware-related. A clean Windows installation, an in-place repair, checking CPU and GPU temperatures, testing the memory, and checking the power supply could solve the lag and hangs. A 10900K is still capable for gaming, editing, and general productivity, and with an RTX 3070 a graphics-card upgrade might provide more gaming benefit than a new CPU and motherboard.

It’s a pretty mixed-use system: audio and video work, Photoshop, lots of browser tabs, camera recording, Plex, occasional VMs, and some gaming. I’m not upgrading because the 10900K is unusable, but because the system has become unstable and I’m already planning a major cleanup.
