A few years ago, seeing 4G on my phone usually meant fast loading, smooth streaming, and apps opening almost immediately. Now, 4G often struggles to load basic apps, and I find myself holding my phone up or waiting for a usable 5G signal. It sometimes feels like older 3G was faster than the 4G I get today. Has 4G actually become slower, or have network usage, carrier priorities, and modern apps changed the experience?

5G isn’t automatically better everywhere. Lower-frequency 4G often travels farther and penetrates buildings better, while some 5G bands need denser tower coverage. In rural or weak-signal areas, 4G may actually be more reliable. If your phone is barely reaching either network, the problem may be signal strength rather than the label displayed on the screen.
The apps and websites have also gotten heavier. Years ago, a page might have mostly been text and a few small images. Now it may load high-resolution media, analytics, autoplay video, and large advertisements. So even if your 4G connection performs similarly, modern software can make it feel much slower.
It varies a lot by carrier and location. Some people still get excellent 4G because their local tower has spare capacity, while others experience severe evening slowdowns from congestion. A speed test at different times of day, along with checking signal strength, can help distinguish a busy tower from a phone or coverage problem.
That matches my experience. Disabling 5G in places where coverage is inconsistent can sometimes produce a steadier 4G connection, though the result depends on the carrier and location.
