What Are the Best DDR4 Motherboards for an i7-14700K?

I'm looking to replace my ASRock H610M/ac so I can upgrade my CPU, ideally to an Intel Core i7-14700K. I'd prefer to keep using my existing DDR4 memory because DDR5 prices are still difficult to justify on a college budget, and I can't reasonably spend $1,200–$1,500 on a complete system upgrade right now. I was initially considering a Z790 board for stronger VRMs and overclocking support, but compatible DDR4 models seem increasingly difficult to find. Are there any good places to look for a DDR4 motherboard, or would a different chipset make more sense?

DDR4 Z790 boards are pretty uncommon now, and most remaining inventory is either used or marked up so much that the savings over DDR5 disappear. A better option would be something like the MSI B760 Gaming Plus WiFi DDR4. Its VRMs should handle a 14700K without trouble, although B760 does not support CPU overclocking. Also, unless you already have experience tuning these chips, overclocking a 14700K probably isn’t worth the extra heat and risk of degradation.

Keep in mind that moving from your current platform to a stronger motherboard may not produce a huge performance gain by itself. The difference between comparable DDR4 and DDR5 setups is often fairly small for gaming, sometimes under 10 percent, so a reasonably priced DDR4 B760 board could be a better value than paying a premium for a rare Z790 DDR4 model.

You may want to check used-market listings since higher-end DDR4 Z790 boards are hard to find new. Just make sure the board supports 14th-generation processors, or confirm that its BIOS can be updated before buying. A decent B760 DDR4 board is likely the more practical choice if you mainly want reliable power delivery rather than overclocking.
