I've had this PC for a few years and want to improve its gaming performance, but I'm not sure which component should come first. Some games run worse than I'd like, including Palworld, Fortnite, and Overwatch, and I've also experienced occasional crashes that seem related to the graphics card. My current system has a Ryzen 5 4500, Radeon RX 6600, 32 GB of DDR4 memory, and an ASRock B450M/ac R2.0 motherboard. My budget is around $1,000, although I can go somewhat over that if the upgrade is worthwhile. What would give me the biggest improvement, and how should I troubleshoot the crashes?

With about $1,000 available, I would consider a balanced GPU and CPU upgrade rather than spending everything on one part. The RX 6600 is likely the main limitation in newer or more demanding games, while the Ryzen 5 4500 can also limit frame rates in CPU-heavy titles. A stronger graphics card paired with a Ryzen 7 5700X3D would let you keep the existing DDR4 memory and motherboard, assuming the required BIOS update is available.
The graphics card is probably the best place to start for the largest immediate gaming improvement. Your 32 GB of RAM is already sufficient, and the motherboard can still support a stronger AM4 processor. After upgrading the GPU, you could replace the Ryzen 5 4500 with something like a Ryzen 7 5700X3D if your board's BIOS supports it. That combination should make a much bigger difference than replacing the RAM or motherboard first.
Before buying anything, troubleshoot the graphics crashes. Use a driver-cleanup utility such as DDU in Safe Mode, then install a fresh AMD graphics driver.
