Can Windows 7 Still Work as the Main OS on an i5-12400 and RTX 4070?

I'm considering using Windows 7 as my primary operating system because I prefer its clean, glassy interface. My PC has an Intel Core i5-12400 and an RTX 4070. Would Windows 7 work reliably with modern hardware and video games, or would I run into driver and compatibility problems?

You could also use a Windows 7-style visual theme on Windows 10 or 11. That gives you the familiar Aero-inspired appearance while keeping compatibility with current hardware, games, and applications.

A lot of newer games have dropped Windows 7 support, so compatibility will be a constant problem. It may still work for older games, but it isn’t a practical main operating system for this hardware.

I mainly like the appearance and simplicity of Windows 7, but I don’t want to give up compatibility with newer games.

I wouldn’t recommend it. The RTX 4070 does not have official Windows 7 drivers, and the i5-12400 platform may also have limited or missing support. Even if you managed to install the system, many modern games and applications would either fail to run or behave unpredictably. Windows 7 is also no longer receiving security updates.

That’s disappointing. Do the newest NVIDIA drivers really not support Windows 7 at all?

If the interface is the main reason, keep a supported version of Windows and customize it instead. Classic Shell or similar tools can bring back the older Start menu and much of the Windows 7 look without losing modern drivers and security updates.

Windows 7 can be interesting for older software or a separate retro system, but I wouldn’t use it as the only OS on a modern gaming PC. A supported Windows release, possibly a less cluttered enterprise-oriented edition, would be the safer choice.
