My Crucial M.2 SSD, purchased around 2020, stopped being detected after my computer froze while I was playing Old School RuneScape. The system shut down, restarted, and went straight into the BIOS. The BIOS still recognizes my HDD, but it does not see the M.2 drive. I reseated the SSD and also tested it in the second M.2 slot beneath the GPU, with the same result. The red BOOT light on my MSI B550 motherboard remains lit even after entering the BIOS. Could the SSD have failed, or are there other troubleshooting steps I should try? I have important files on the drive that I would really like to recover.

An SSD from 2020 is not automatically at the end of its life, but several years of writes, heat, or a sudden electrical failure can cause one to disappear without warning. A heatsink can help with sustained workloads, but the immediate priority is testing the drive externally and recovering your data rather than assuming age alone caused the problem.
The best next step is to test the SSD outside the motherboard with an inexpensive USB M.2 NVMe enclosure. If the enclosure and another computer also fail to detect it, the drive’s controller may have failed. If it does appear, copy your important files immediately and then troubleshoot the motherboard or M.2 slots.
Crucial offers storage-management software, but it will only help if the SSD is detected by the operating system. Since the BIOS cannot see the drive in either M.2 slot, software is unlikely to fix this until the hardware is recognized. The steady BOOT light generally means the system cannot find a bootable drive, which fits the symptoms.
I didn’t realize USB enclosures for M.2 drives were available, so I ordered one. Hopefully the SSD is still readable because I have important files stored on it.
