I'm looking for the best gaming upgrade for my current system. My overclocked Ryzen 5 5600 seems to be limiting my RTX 5070 Ti, especially with average FPS and 1% lows at 1440p. The rest of the system is a B450 motherboard, 32GB of DDR4-3400, a large custom AIO, and a 750W Gold power supply.
My main options are a used Ryzen 7 5700X3D for about $350 as a drop-in AM4 upgrade, or a full AM5 rebuild with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, B650 motherboard, and 32GB of DDR5 for roughly $1,150 or more. I've also considered a used Intel 13700K or 14900K with a DDR4 board, but the power consumption, platform cost, and reliability concerns make that route less appealing.
A new 5800X3D costs around $500 here, so it doesn't seem worthwhile. Would the 5700X3D noticeably improve average FPS and stuttering, or would AM5 be worth the much higher price for gaming? Is there a better CPU, platform, memory-tuning step, or other upgrade path I'm overlooking?

A 14600K with a suitable B760 or Z-series board can be competitive in gaming and offers stronger multicore performance, but it brings higher power use and less attractive upgrade options. The Intel route only makes sense if the used CPU and motherboard are significantly cheaper than the AM4 option. Also, make sure the claimed bottleneck is confirmed with GPU utilization and per-core CPU monitoring rather than judging only from low FPS; some ray-traced games are simply GPU-limited even with a faster processor.
A full AM5 upgrade will remove more of the CPU limitation and gives you a future upgrade path, but it isn’t automatically worth an extra $800 just for gaming. The listed DDR5 cost also seems unusually high; a normal 32GB DDR5 kit should generally cost far less. Recheck local pricing, because that could make the AM5 option much more reasonable. The 7800X3D is efficient enough that the 750W Gold PSU should normally be fine, assuming it’s a quality unit.
The 5700X3D should be a meaningful gaming improvement over the 5600 in CPU-limited games, particularly for frame-time consistency and 1% lows. It won’t magically double performance, though, and $350 is a fairly high price for an older AM4 chip. If you can find one substantially cheaper, it’s probably the best value because it reuses your board, RAM, cooler, and power supply. At the price listed, I’d be more inclined to wait or save for a newer platform.
