Will an Encrypted Mac Backup Fully Restore My iPhone 14 Pro to an iPhone 17 Pro?

I'm upgrading from an iPhone 14 Pro to an iPhone 17 Pro, but my trade-in requires me to hand over the old phone immediately when the new one arrives. That means I won't have time for a direct phone-to-phone transfer. I have a MacBook and an iPad, so I'm planning to make an encrypted backup of the current iPhone on my Mac immediately beforehand and restore it to the new phone.

I'm especially concerned about WhatsApp because verification SMS messages currently aren't reaching my number. Will the encrypted Mac backup restore all my apps, photos, files, settings, and other data as closely as possible? Will it preserve WhatsApp chats, contacts, documents, and voice notes? Will WhatsApp remain logged in, or will I need to verify my number again on the new phone? Finally, is there a meaningful risk of corruption or data loss when restoring an encrypted backup from an older iPhone model to a new one?

Handle WhatsApp separately before handing over the old iPhone. In WhatsApp, open Settings, then Chats, then Chat Backup, and run a fresh backup. Enable videos if you want them included, and make absolutely sure you know the password, passkey, or 64-digit recovery key if end-to-end encrypted backup is enabled.

An encrypted computer backup should restore the phone very close to its previous state, and it’s generally a more complete option than a basic device-to-device transfer. However, it isn’t a perfect bit-for-bit clone. Some apps may require you to sign in again, and certain app data is controlled by the app’s own backup system.

So it’s best to treat the restore as a strong starting point, then check important apps and accounts individually before erasing the old phone.

There’s no special reason a properly completed encrypted backup should be corrupted merely because it came from an older iPhone model. Still, no backup method is guaranteed. Let the backup finish successfully, keep the old phone untouched until the new one has been restored and checked, and verify photos, files, messages, and important apps before wiping anything.

Restoring the iPhone backup will not normally keep WhatsApp logged in on the new device. WhatsApp requires activation on the new phone and generally verifies the number again. It only allows one active primary phone session, so activating the new phone can sign the old one out. Because your SMS verification is currently failing, resolve that issue before surrendering the old phone if possible.

The WhatsApp cloud backup can restore chats and included media after activation, but it shouldn’t be assumed that a Mac backup preserves an active WhatsApp session.
