Should I Choose AM4 with DDR4 or AM5 with DDR5 for My First PC Build?

For a typical AM5 gaming build, a reasonably priced 32GB DDR5-6000 kit is a sensible target, but don’t sacrifice the CPU, graphics card, or power supply just to buy premium low-latency memory. A slightly slower or cheaper kit is usually preferable to cutting back on the components that affect gaming performance more.

AM4 is still perfectly capable at 1440p. The monitor resolution doesn’t depend on AM4 versus AM5 nearly as much as the graphics card does, and a Ryzen 5000 system can provide smooth gaming with a suitable GPU. AM4 makes sense if choosing it lets you afford a much stronger graphics card, but you should accept that future CPU upgrades will be limited.

If your budget can cover it, AM5 is the better long-term choice. You get newer processors, DDR5 support, and a realistic CPU upgrade path later without replacing the motherboard and memory. Try not to overspend on an extreme CPU just to afford the platform, though—the graphics card matters more for 1440p gaming.

The difference between DDR4 and DDR5 is often less noticeable than people expect in games, especially at 1440p where the GPU is usually the limiting factor. The main advantage of AM5 here is platform longevity, not a guaranteed huge FPS improvement from the memory alone.

First find out exactly how much your parents are willing to contribute. If AM5 forces you to make major compromises elsewhere, a balanced AM4 build may be the better gaming PC today. If the total prices are reasonably close, choose AM5 because DDR4 is not necessarily cheap enough right now to justify committing to an older platform.
