Is upgrading from a Ryzen 5 5600G to a Ryzen 7 5700X worth it?

My current system has a Ryzen 5 5600G, Radeon RX 6600, 16GB of 3200MHz RAM, a 650W 80+ Bronze power supply, and a Gigabyte B450M motherboard. In newer games, my GPU usage often seems reasonable while the CPU stays heavily loaded. Lowering the graphics settings does not improve performance much, so I suspect the processor is holding things back. Older games run well, but I have been offered a Ryzen 7 5700X in exchange for my 5600G plus some extra cash. Would this be a worthwhile upgrade for gaming, and is there anything else I should consider?

It could be worthwhile if the games you play are genuinely CPU-limited. The 5700X has two additional cores, higher clocks, and twice the L3 cache of the 5600G, which can improve average frame rates, stuttering, and 1% lows. Your motherboard, RAM, and power supply should be suitable, but check that the BIOS supports the 5700X before swapping it in. You will also want a decent aftermarket cooler, such as an AG400 or AK400, rather than relying on a basic stock cooler.

Expect the improvement to vary by game. A CPU-limited title might see roughly 20–30% better performance, but with an RX 6600 the difference will often be smaller because the graphics card can become the limiting factor. The trade is more convenient than buying a 5700X and selling the 5600G separately, so it makes sense if the cash difference is reasonable.
