I'm trying to use an older HP desktop computer from around 2007, but it won't power on at all. Pressing the computer's power button produces no lights, sounds, or other signs of activity. The monitor works when I switch on the power strip, but it displays "monitor going to sleep" because the desktop itself never starts. I checked that nothing appears disconnected. What should I troubleshoot first, and is the power supply likely to have failed?

The monitor going to sleep is expected when it isn’t receiving a signal from the computer. Since the monitor only powers on with the power strip and the desktop remains completely dead, the issue is probably inside the desktop rather than with the monitor or internet connection. At that age, replacing the power supply may be necessary, though the power button or motherboard could also be faulty.
Start with the basics: make sure the power strip is switched on, try plugging the computer directly into a known-working wall outlet, and check both ends of the power cable. If there’s still absolutely no light, fan movement, or sound, the desktop’s power supply is a likely failure point—especially for a computer that old.
