I'm using an ASUS B650-PLUS WIFI motherboard with Windows 11 64-bit. I recently switched from USB headphones to a pair that uses a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack, so I started using the case's front-panel audio connection for the first time in years.
With Realtek driver version 6.0.9888.1, the front-panel audio behaves strangely. Volume fluctuates dramatically, with some sounds becoming extremely loud and others nearly disappearing. Speech with strong noise-gate effects makes the problem especially obvious, since the headphone volume seems to jump whenever someone starts or stops talking. I noticed the same behavior with two different pairs of headphones.
Removing the Realtek drivers and letting Windows reinstall its default audio driver temporarily fixed the front-panel connection. However, the audio became quieter, Realtek Audio Console stopped opening and reported that it did not support the machine, and eventually both headphone pairs only produced sound from the right side.
Installing ASUS's newest driver restored stereo output and made Realtek Audio Console work again, but the severe volume fluctuations returned. The problem appears limited to the front-panel audio connection; I have not thoroughly tested whether the rear connection behaves the same way.
Another difference is that the Windows-installed driver lists the front headphones, rear speakers, and microphone as separate devices. The ASUS/Realtek package instead combines them under one speaker device. Is this more likely to be a driver configuration issue, faulty front-panel wiring, or a bad case connector?

The newer Realtek package has a setting that can separate the front and rear outputs again. In Realtek Audio Console, open the advanced device settings and enable the option to make the front and rear output devices play separate audio streams simultaneously. Windows should then show them as separate devices, and you can rename them in its sound settings.
The front-panel jack and rear motherboard output can behave differently because the case’s audio cable runs through a fairly electrically noisy environment. Poor shielding, a loose connector, or low-quality case wiring can cause noise and unstable behavior. The driver package also installs extra Realtek functionality for jack detection and automatic switching, which explains why it combines the inputs and outputs differently from Windows’ basic driver.
A useful test is to reinstall the basic Windows driver and compare the front and rear outputs. If the rear jack is consistently clean while the front jack still fluctuates, inspect the HD Audio cable connections on the motherboard and try another case or an external audio adapter if possible.
I checked the motherboard manual and reseated the front-panel audio connections. They didn’t feel obviously loose, but pushing them in again seems to have fixed the unstable audio so far.

That setting brought back separate front and rear devices for me. I can now see them independently in Windows and rename them as needed. Reseating the front-panel connector also appears to have resolved the volume fluctuations.
