I'm coming from a cybersecurity background with experience across Windows and Linux, VS Code, PowerShell, security automation, vulnerability research, software versions and dependencies, and code repositories. I understand Git and GitHub conceptually, but I haven't used Git extensively in a development workflow.
I'm preparing for a DevOps or software engineering role involving automation, CI/CD, source control, testing, deployments, and security integration. For people working in DevOps or DevSecOps, what topics and hands-on skills should I prioritize before interviewing? What do you wish you had learned before making the transition?

The biggest gap to close is hands-on Git experience. Practice branching, pull requests, rebasing or merging, resolving conflicts, and understanding what a bad merge looks like. Then connect Git to a small CI/CD project so you can see how commits trigger builds, tests, and deployments.
Your security background will transfer well, but pipeline troubleshooting is a major part of the day-to-day work. Learn to diagnose issues such as missing environment variables, leaked build arguments, dependency failures, permission problems, and flaky tests—not just how to design a secure pipeline.
Use the job description as your study guide. The required tools and responsibilities usually tell you exactly what the team expects, so prioritize those instead of trying to learn every DevOps technology at once.
Get comfortable using Linux regularly, then focus on CI/CD and Kubernetes. There’s a lot of material out there, so it helps to work through a structured DevOps or DevSecOps roadmap and concentrate on the core topics before branching out.
Build a solid foundation in the software development life cycle, learn at least one major cloud platform, and understand basic architecture. Infrastructure as code and GitOps are also important because they connect source control with repeatable infrastructure and deployment workflows.
