I found a gutted tower at a yard sale containing an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, a Noctua NH-D15 cooler, and an ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero motherboard. The previous owner is unavailable, so I have no idea why the rest of the system was removed or whether these parts still work. The CPU pins look fine, and I don't see any obvious motherboard damage. I only paid a couple of dollars for everything. Is it worth buying the remaining parts needed to test it? If the components work, would a Ryzen 9 5950X and this motherboard still be worth building around in 2026 with an RTX 5060? I'm fairly new to building PCs and normally use a small mini PC with an external GPU.

The main question would normally be how much the system costs, since buying old parts just to troubleshoot them can add up. In your case, paying only a couple of dollars makes it absolutely worth trying. If both parts work, AM4 is older but the 5950X still offers plenty of performance, especially paired with an RTX 5060.
That CPU and GPU should make a solid combination, and the 5950X is still a capable processor. You don’t need to buy a case just to test the parts. Set the motherboard on its box or another nonconductive surface and connect a compatible power supply, one stick of DDR4 memory, the NH-D15 cooler, the RTX 5060, a monitor, and a keyboard. You can also use a bootable USB drive if you want to test with a live operating system.
Testing outside the case is often easier because it eliminates the possibility of a misplaced standoff or case short causing problems. You’ll need a PSU, DDR4 RAM, the CPU cooler, graphics card, monitor, keyboard, and ideally a bootable USB drive since there may be no storage installed. If it reaches the BIOS, that’s a good initial sign, though you should still test stability afterward.
