Is a Properly Reset Used iPhone as Secure as a New One?

My S23 recently stopped working, and I'm thinking about buying a used iPhone to save money. My main concern is privacy and security: after the previous owner signs out and performs a proper factory reset, is the phone essentially as secure as a new device? Is there any realistic chance that spyware or other malicious software could survive the reset? I'd also appreciate advice on what to check when buying a second-hand iPhone.

If you want extra reassurance, you can connect the phone to a computer and perform a DFU restore. That reinstalls the operating system rather than relying only on the normal reset process, though it’s usually unnecessary for an ordinary purchase.

Yes, for nearly everyone, a properly erased used iPhone is effectively in the same software state as a new one. Use “Erase All Content and Settings,” and make sure the previous owner has signed out of their Apple Account. The reset removes the encryption keys for user data, so ordinary apps and spyware shouldn’t survive.

The main exception would be an extremely sophisticated, low-level compromise, which is not a realistic concern for typical buyers. The more important check is that the phone is not still Activation Locked.

The bigger practical risks are the seller and the device’s condition, not malware surviving a reset. Buy from a reputable source, confirm the phone boots to the setup screen, check that Activation Lock is gone, and inspect the battery and other replacement parts. Non-original parts can affect reliability and some features.

Where you buy it matters. A reputable refurbisher with a return policy is much safer than buying from an unknown individual. Check the serial number, battery health, carrier compatibility, repair history if available, and make sure the seller erases the phone in front of you.
