I need to remove my ASUS TUF Gaming RTX 3080 Ti to install an M.2 SSD in the second slot of my ASUS ROG Strix X570-E Gaming motherboard. Unfortunately, the board's middle cover has to come off first, and the graphics card blocks access to it.
I've removed the GPU's screws and disconnected both PCIe power cables. The computer is lying on its side, with the graphics card facing upward. The card feels loose everywhere except at the PCIe retention latch. The latch moves down slightly, but it won't release like the latch on the empty slot below it.
I've tried gently pushing the GPU back into the slot while pressing the latch, using a wooden chopstick because the latch is mostly covered by the card. I also tried a flathead screwdriver, but I'm worried about damaging the motherboard.
What's the safest way to release the latch and remove the GPU?

Pressing the latch and pulling the GPU have to happen at the same time, but don’t yank it. Keep the card level and pull both the front and rear upward together after the clip releases. If the CPU cooler or another component makes it impossible to reach the latch safely, temporarily removing the cooler may give you a better angle. Have replacement thermal paste ready if you remove it.
The card needs to be completely reseated before the latch will release. It sounds like the rear end may have been pulled out first, leaving the GPU slightly angled and putting pressure on the retention clip. Gently push the card straight back into the slot, and make sure the metal bracket at the case rear is still aligned with its opening. Once the GPU is fully seated and level, press the latch straight down while pulling the card evenly from both ends.
If you can’t get a straight angle with the chopstick, a long nonconductive tool or the eraser end of a pencil is safer than a screwdriver. Make sure the GPU’s rear metal tab isn’t caught against the case; guide it back into alignment before trying the latch again. The card should slide out smoothly once the latch is fully disengaged, so stop if significant force is needed.
Avoid the metal screwdriver if possible. A slip can damage motherboard traces or components. With the PC on its side, use a pencil eraser or wooden chopstick to press directly down on the top of the latch. Keep the GPU perfectly straight and apply steady pressure rather than twisting or levering against the slot. The latch usually releases only when the card is pushed fully back into place first.

I tried reseating it, but the latch still won’t pop open and pressing it seems to make the card feel even tighter.
