How should I handle school monitoring software on my Windows laptop?

I had to install Impero on my personal Windows laptop for school. It appears to let teachers lock the screen, control the computer remotely, view browsing history, take screenshots, use the webcam, and record keystrokes, with data sent to the company's servers. I tried removing it from startup, but it still launches when Windows boots. I'm not very familiar with Windows and don't want to break anything or lose the ability to use it for occasional school tests. What is the safest way to handle this?

Impero is school monitoring software, so its presence doesn’t necessarily mean the laptop is infected with spyware. If the school requires it, don’t try to bypass or modify its monitoring features yourself. Ask the school’s IT staff to explain exactly when it should run and to remove it when it’s no longer required.

I’m mainly worried because it runs with LocalSystem privileges. I’d prefer to limit access to things like the webcam and keyboard, but I don’t want to interfere with a required test.

If this is your personal laptop, the safest approach is to use a separate device for school software whenever possible. Monitoring programs can have broad permissions, and disabling parts of them may cause problems or violate the school’s requirements. If you must use the same machine, cover the webcam when it isn’t needed and keep personal activity on another device.

I do have a separate Debian machine, but school sometimes requires us to use this Windows laptop. I’ll keep personal work on the other computer and ask IT about removing the software after the required tests.

You can check Windows Settings under Apps to see whether Impero has a normal uninstall option, but don’t remove it without confirming with the school. Since the IT staff said it is only needed for occasional tests, ask them for the official installer and removal instructions so you can reinstall it later if necessary.
