I'm a student in Germany, nearly finished with my bachelor's degree, and I'm worried that my programming skills are much weaker than I thought. I've studied several languages, including Java and Scala, and I recently continued CS50P after taking a break. I'm currently around the sixth lesson.
I can handle small exercises, but I don't yet feel capable of building a complete application independently. I also don't want to focus on web development, and I'm unsure which direction would offer useful career opportunities. Since I need work experience or an internship to complete my degree, I'm actively looking for a position but don't feel ready for the job market.
What would be the fastest realistic way to improve? I'd like a practical Python or general programming roadmap that goes beyond watching tutorials and completing tiny exercises. Ideally, I want to build progressively more substantial projects that could eventually become part of a portfolio. What kinds of projects, study habits, or work experiences would help most?

Using AI as a learning aid isn’t automatically a problem. You can ask it to explain a concept, compare approaches, or help you understand documentation, but make sure you can explain and modify the resulting code yourself. Use it to support your learning rather than letting it replace the process of designing, debugging, and making decisions on your own.
Don’t wait until you feel completely ready before applying. A degree alone doesn’t make someone fully job-ready—professional experience does. Apply for internships and working-student positions as soon as possible, especially since your program requires practical experience. Your first role is meant to teach you how development works in a team, not prove that you already know everything.
Pick one direction for now instead of trying to master every language. If Python is your current focus, finish the fundamentals, then build a sequence of projects: a command-line utility, a project that stores data in a database, something that consumes an API, and finally a larger application with tests, documentation, error handling, and version control. A polished small project is better portfolio evidence than a huge unfinished idea.
