My AirPods have started disconnecting repeatedly, but only at my local gym. This has happened during my last three visits. With my older AirPods 2, they disconnected within a minute of reconnecting. I recently bought AirPods Pro 3, and they work for longer, but still cut out or stop playing in certain areas before sometimes disconnecting completely. I use an iPhone 17 and an Apple Watch, and everything works normally elsewhere—including during a 12 km run. The gym is large and crowded, and this problem only started within the past week or so. Could something in the gym's environment be interfering with the Bluetooth connection?

You can still try the usual troubleshooting—forget and re-pair the AirPods, restart the iPhone and Watch, and test with the Watch temporarily left at home. But since two different pairs work everywhere else, replacing the headphones or repeatedly resetting them is unlikely to solve this. Wired headphones would avoid the interference, at least as a temporary workaround.
This sounds much more like heavy wireless interference or congestion than a problem with both pairs of AirPods. Bluetooth uses the crowded 2.4 GHz band, and a busy gym may have lots of phones, watches, wireless equipment, TV systems, or other transmitters competing in the same areas. The fact that it happens only in certain spots strongly supports that explanation. Try using the AirPods in different parts of the gym and see whether the problem follows a particular area.
Several people experiencing this at the same gym would point toward something recently installed or changed there, such as wireless displays, fitness equipment, access-control systems, or a network device. AirDrop itself normally should not take over an active headphone connection, so turning it off probably will not fix the underlying issue. It may be worth reporting the exact locations and timing to the gym staff so they can investigate their equipment.
