My Dell Precision 7510 originally used a 130W charger, but it stopped working. I bought a replacement rated at only 90W. Will the laptop still charge, especially if it is turned off, and what should I expect when using it while plugged in?

The lower wattage does not automatically mean it will charge faster or slower in a simple fixed ratio. Dell systems can detect an underpowered adapter and may show a warning, reduce performance, or disable charging while the laptop is running. For reliable operation, replace it with the proper Dell-rated adapter rather than relying on the 90W one.
When the computer is powered off or lightly used, the 90W adapter will likely be able to charge the battery. During gaming, heavy calculations, or other sustained workloads, the laptop could draw power from the battery even while plugged in. A charger matching the laptop’s recommended wattage is the safer choice, and make sure the voltage, connector, and charger identification are compatible.
It should charge, but probably more slowly than with the correct adapter. The laptop may also limit performance or refuse to charge the battery while you’re doing demanding work, since the system can use more than 90W under load.

What if I leave the laptop shut down while it charges—would the 90W adapter be sufficient then?
