Windows 11 randomly disables USB devices after startup or sleep

My prebuilt Windows 11 desktop randomly fails to initialize one to three USB-connected devices when I boot the system or wake it from sleep. Usually the monitor fails, but sometimes the mouse or keyboard also stops working, leaving me unable to reach the login screen or troubleshoot normally. Restarting with the power button does not consistently help; the failed device may change after each reboot. I have already disabled Windows USB Selective Suspend and Fast Startup. What else should I check?

If the problem continues after the power-management and BIOS checks, try updating the motherboard chipset and USB drivers, along with the BIOS. Also test whether the issue happens only after sleep; if so, temporarily disable sleep and use a normal shutdown instead. That can help determine whether the failure is related to resume handling rather than ordinary boot.

Check the BIOS/UEFI settings for a separate Fast Boot option and disable that too. It is different from Windows Fast Startup, so turning off the Windows setting does not necessarily change the firmware’s USB initialization behavior.

Look for hardware-related warnings in Event Viewer, the BIOS hardware monitor, or your motherboard’s diagnostic tools. USB overcurrent or overvoltage messages could indicate a failing port, cable, power supply, or motherboard chipset. Since the headphone jack is also unreliable, I would not rule out a motherboard or front-panel connection problem. Test the devices on different rear motherboard ports and disconnect unnecessary USB hardware while troubleshooting.

In Device Manager, open the properties for each USB Root Hub and USB Generic Hub, then check the Power Management tab. Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” This can sometimes prevent USB devices from disappearing after sleep or startup.

I’ll try changing those settings for every hub and see whether the behavior improves.
