I'm troubleshooting 802.1X on a Dell laptop connected through a Dell WD19 or WD19S dock. The setup is laptop → dock → Ethernet → switch. When the laptop is connected directly to the switch, it authenticates successfully with 802.1X. Through the dock, however, the switch learns the laptop's real MAC address and Forescout identifies it correctly, but the port falls back to MAC Authentication Bypass instead of completing dot1x. It appears that the laptop's EAPOL frames are not reaching the switch. The laptop's wired 802.1X configuration works when used without the dock. Could this be caused by dock firmware, the Realtek network driver, MAC passthrough, BIOS settings, or an EAPOL pass-through issue?

Run Dell Command | Update while the laptop is physically connected to the dock. Update the dock firmware, laptop BIOS, chipset and bridge firmware, Ethernet drivers, and any other dock-related components. Leave it connected through the reboot cycle so the dock firmware update actually completes. Several people have found dock connectivity and authentication problems disappear after doing this.
WD19 and WD19S docks can work with 802.1X, so the dock model itself isn’t necessarily incompatible. One useful test is to configure the switch port for 802.1X only, without MAB. That helps confirm whether the problem is genuinely missing EAPOL traffic rather than an authentication policy issue.
Also verify the Windows Wired AutoConfig service is running and that 802.1X is enabled for the wired adapter. We’ve seen newly imaged machines where the service wasn’t enabled even though the expected Group Policy settings were present. Check those settings before assuming the dock is dropping EAPOL.
Check the laptop BIOS for the MAC passthrough setting as well. Since the switch is learning the laptop’s address, passthrough may already be working, but it’s still worth confirming the intended setting and updating the dock’s network driver. Older Realtek drivers and dock firmware have caused packet loss and intermittent Ethernet behavior.
