I'm currently running Linux Mint XFCE on a Dell Latitude E6420. The desktop feels fairly lightweight, but some games that should meet the laptop's requirements occasionally cause the system to slow down or crash. I'm considering switching to Arch because I've heard it can be more lightweight, but I'm worried that I won't be able to configure or optimize it properly. Would Arch meaningfully improve performance, or should I try something else first?

Switching to Arch probably won’t provide a noticeable performance boost. It may use slightly less memory at idle, but that difference is unlikely to improve gaming or prevent crashes. Arch also requires more hands-on setup and ongoing maintenance, so it may add complexity without solving the underlying issue.
Before changing distributions, check what is actually causing the crashes. Monitor RAM, CPU, GPU temperature, and swap usage while launching a game. Enabling ZRAM can help if memory pressure is the problem, but it won’t fix overheating, graphics-driver issues, or hardware limitations.
If this is your main computer for everyday tasks, don’t switch to Arch solely because it sounds lightweight. A minimal installation of another distribution might save a little RAM, but the desktop environment and game configuration usually matter more than the distribution itself. Arch is better chosen when you specifically want its packages and are comfortable maintaining the system.
